R-22 is a single-component HCFC that served residential and commercial air conditioning and refrigeration for decades. It remains the correct service refrigerant for the equipment designed around it; there is no drop-in that matches it exactly.
Production and import of new R-22 ended in the United States on 1 January 2020 under the Clean Air Act phase-out, so the supply available for service is recovered, recycled, and reclaimed material. Recovery is mandatory and venting is prohibited — plan the service around a recovery machine and a recovery cylinder.

Sold to certified professionals. United States federal rules require EPA Section 608 certification to purchase and handle regulated refrigerant (Section 609 for motor vehicle air conditioning). Venting refrigerant to the atmosphere is prohibited; recover it with approved equipment. Confirm the refrigerant against the equipment nameplate before charging — refrigerants are not interchangeable, and the wrong charge can damage equipment and void its warranty.
Cylinders ship non-refillable and single-use. Do not refill, heat above 125 °F (52 °C), or transport a cylinder outside its upright, secured position.
