The A2 models are the NPE-2 units that arrive with recirculation already inside the cabinet — Navien’s ComfortFlow buffer tank and pump. That is the difference worth paying for if the complaint you are solving is the wait for hot water at a distant fixture, not raw capacity.
The NPE-180A2 modulates from 10,000 to 150,000 BTU/h at a 0.95 UEF and delivers up to 8.4 GPM at a 35°F rise. Because the pump and buffer tank are integral, no external recirculation pump or dedicated return line hardware has to be sourced separately, though the plumbing layout still has to support the recirculation method chosen.
